ATEX Motors and Hoses in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres

In environments where the potential for explosions due to combustible gases, vapors or dust exists, the use of specialized equipment is vital to ensure safety and compliance with international standards. Among the most crucial pieces of equipment in these environments are ATEX-certified motors and hoses.

ATEX, an abbreviation for "ATmosphères EXplosibles" is a set of European Union regulations that ensure the safety of products used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Products bearing the ATEX certification have undergone rigorous testing to confirm they won't ignite explosive materials.

ATEX 114 and ATEX 153

ATEX regulations apply to gas, vapor and dust explosions.

The ATEX 114 (2014/34 EU) directive specifies requirements for equipment and protective systems designed for areas prone to explosions. This directive is focused solely on the design and production aspects, targeting manufacturers specifically.

On the other hand, ATEX 153 (1999/92/EC) addresses the safe use of equipment and protective systems in explosive environments. It establishes minimum safety standards for both the workplace and equipment to ensure employee safety in such hazardous areas.

ATEX Motors: Explosion-proofing

ATEX motors are designed to either contain any explosion within the device or prevent hazardous external conditions from igniting combustible materials inside. They have robust housings and are often sealed to prevent the entry or escape of explosive gases or dust.

ATEX motors are classified based on the type of environment they're suitable for – whether it's gas or dust, and the likelihood of the presence of explosive materials.

Common applications include chemical plants, grain processing facilities, oil refineries, and other environments where explosive atmospheres might be present.

ATEX Hoses: Safe Conduits in Hazardous Environments

Hoses in explosive environments may carry flammable liquids or gases, or they may be exposed to external explosive atmospheres. ATEX-certified hoses are designed to be resistant to ignition, ensuring that they don't become a source of ignition themselves.

These hoses are made from materials that are resistant to the chemicals they might carry and have antistatic properties to prevent static electricity build-up, a potential ignition source.

Used in fuel transfer, chemical transportation, and other processes where flammable materials are conveyed.

Key Considerations When Choosing ATEX Equipment

  •  Zone Classification: Understand the specific classification of the area (e.g., Zone 0, 1, 2 for gases and Zone 20, 21, 22 for dust). Equipment should be appropriately rated for the zone it will operate in.
  • Material Compatibility: Ensure the equipment materials are compatible with the substances they will be exposed to. This includes chemical resistance and temperature resistance.
  • Maintenance and Inspection: Regular checks and maintenance are essential to ensure that ATEX-certified equipment remains in safe working order. Wear and tear or damage can compromise the safety features.
