Placing food hygiene in safe hands

By the time a food product reaches the consumer, food safety should be the last thing on anyone’s mind. In fact it shouldn’t even be an issue when the product hits the retailers’ shelves. By then – processed, packaged and delivered – food safety should be (sometimes literally) baked in. But even the most minor contamination at the beginning of the supply chain, or at any point in the production process, can be enough to provide the customer with an unsafe product. One solution is in your hands.

Much food production and product preparation involves manual handling. This can be a health and safety risk in not just one but two ways.

On the one hand, there’s the risk of food contamination from poor hand hygiene. On the other, there’s the potential for injury from integral parts of the production process – whether that’s the risk of abrasion or cuts, or injury from heat or cold. And in a vicious circle of contamination, a cut or other hand injury can lead to foreign bodies – from blood at least, to skin or fingers at worst – entering the product.

So to maintain scrupulous food hygiene – and protect employees from injury – it’s essential you choose the right work gloves for the task at hand.

Recipe for a perfect glove

There are as almost as many types of glove as there are tasks in food production and processing. That’s because a glove which is tough enough for cut protection – for example – may be too thick and stiff for easy handling of small items. Or a glove that allows manual dexterity may be too absorbent for use in a wet environment.

And that’s why Ansell – leading specialists in gloves for industrial use – offer a choice of options to meet the demands of wearers across a whole spectrum of food production operations.

One glove doesn’t fit all

Matching the Ansell glove to the task leads to greater food safety, greater wearer safety and comfort, and greater productivity. All these gloves are fully compliant with food handling requirements.

High dexterity, durability and comfort – Ansell TouchNTuff® 92-600, disposable

Highly absorbent and lightweight – Ansell AlphaTec® 79-700

Nitrile chemical work gloves with AQUADRI™ Technology, which absorbs up to 10x more than gloves with cotton flocking. Wearers’ hands stay drier for longer, even in wetter working environments. AQUADRI™ is also less favourable to bacteria growth, and releases fewer particles when the gloves are pulled on or off.

Hand fatigue protection, now with added sustainability – Ansell HyFlex® 11-840

Incorporating ERGOFORM™ Technology to support musculoskeletal health, these general purpose machine-washable work gloves offer outstanding durability. ZONZ™ Technology improves the wearer’s range of motion through optimized knitting of the glove material. Already a best-seller, the glove now also comes with upgraded sustainability (11-842).

Food safety defined

Ansell work gloves for the food industry are (depending on intended application) generally compliant with the following:

  • Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
Manufacturers of materials and articles intended for food contact must supply a written GMP declaration of conformance, to indicate that products have been manufactured in accordance with regulations.
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
These eliminate risk and ensure the requirements of safe food handling are carried out, enabling companies to meet the best practice food safety standards.
  • EN 388
This is a standardised way of testing the extent to which a glove is able to protect against abrasions, cuts, tears and punctures.
