The feedback device is set up in a precise position and when the motor is took apart and put back together the feedback device will need to be put back to exactly where it was originally taken – they are most commonly used in closed-loop systems.

For example, think of a paint line at a car manufacturing plant, where the motor only needs to move a certain distance to cover its required course, with an encoder serving as a sensor that determines speed and position feedback.
